South Whidbey Record: All voters want what is best

With the party conventions almost over, we are bound to be imbued with an avalanche of partisan talking points and false accusations.

However, voters must sift through the partisan filth that fills our newspapers, televisions and radios. They need to vote for the candidate that demonstrates an ability to find the best solutions to problems.

Tim Knue believes in the power of compromise and open discussion to thwart the rancor of partisanship that fills our newspapers and televisions. As a teacher for 32 years, he cultivated the skills to work with students, parents, fellow teachers and administrators. Tim Knue was “Teacher of the Year” in 2001 for his dedication to his students, and his willingness to work with everyone.

The struggle to work with everyone in the political process in this nation is as old as this nation. However, it is comforting that other leaders have found ways to accomplish goals that help everyone.

One leader that struggled with the scourge of partisan hatred was Thomas Jefferson, but he profoundly articulated the concept that we should all keep in mind.

Jefferson wrote that "every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle. We have called by different names brethren of the same principle."

Jefferson was a leader that understood that all voters want what is best for the nation, and we need a leader for the 10th District that understands this concept as well. There is certainly more that unites us than divides us, and we should not seek the opinions of those that speak with such discontent and hatred with little desire to learn the truth.

We need Tim Knue in Olympia to assure that this basic principle of good government is provided in the state House of Representatives for the 10th District.

We need real people in Olympia, not professional politicians committed to obstruction, inaction and self-serving special interests. Democrats Tim Knue and Patricia Terry have valuable, practical experience at doing, not just saying things.

Knue (pronounced “canoe”) has 32 years as an educator and expertise in sustainable agriculture. Twice teacher of the year, recently recognized by Cornell University for his positive influence on young people, our future.

Patricia Terry is a registered nurse with 30 years of experience, an educator and an administrator. She is an expert in healthcare delivery.

Patricia realizes that health equals wealth and that our system is crumbling. It is the most inefficient, inequitable and expensive system in the industrialized world! She has the solutions to fix it.

Republicans Norma Smith and Barbara Bailey, in contrast, are professional politicians whose practical experience is limited primarily to communication, i.e. talking.

Smith has worked for a building directory, a fundamental Christian organization and for a tiny communication company in Langley.

Bailey’s experience, outside of being a hotel worker, is limited to being a motivational speaker.

We face unprecedented challenges in this, the 21st century. We’ve seen where ignoring them has gotten us. We need leaders with real world experience who see the opportunities in these challenges.

Patricia Terry and Tim Knue know that education and health are the true sources of wealth, security and happiness. Let’s not fiddle around. Vote for Tim Knue and Patricia Terry and let’s get things done and done right!

Vote for doers, not talkers. I guarantee you’ll be glad you did.

Tim returned to teach at high schools in Sumner, Mukilteo and Mount Vernon. He taught agriculture in Mount Vernon since 1981. In 2001 he was Teacher of the Year for the Washington State Career & Technical Educators Association. The very next year he was Teacher of the Year of the 15 western states for the National Association of Career and Technical Educators. Just three months ago he was honored at Cornell University for being the teacher who had the greatest influence for a student graduating in the top 10 of their class at Cornell U.

Tim is a quiet, low key guy with a keen ability to cut through nonsense to get things done. For those of us who want to see education, agriculture, as well as quality of life improved and preserved, now is our chance to have him as our Representative.

Tim’s background in agriculture gives him experience and knowledge with the issue that local farmers face. Tim’s time on the farm began when he was a young man, helping his father with the daily chores of a small family farm. He was active in 4-H and other activities for youth. This started the development of his leadership skills. His background in the farms and fields of Whidbey Island prompted him to earn his degree in agriculture from Washington State University.

After he graduated, he began his 32 year teaching career. This kept him informed on local agricultural issues. His commitment to teaching led to more responsibilities, which gave him administrative experience. Tim truly has a firsthand appreciation for our farms and the need to maintain a balance of farm land and our natural resources.

Tim’s roots in the community extend to his childhood. I was a friend of Tim’s parents, Bonnie and Jean. Bonnie was a teacher at Oak Harbor High School and Jean worked at the Navy Exchange. I went to the Elks RV Club’s meeting with his parents frequently, and we spent many trips and outings together. Knowing the character of Tim’s parents and the values they taught him, I am confident to say Tim is our best candidate for the State House of Representatives.

As our State Representative, Tim’s well rounded experience in education, agriculture, and leadership will help us solve our problems. He has the ability to overcome adversity and hardships which is a skill that he learned on the farms, and he learned from teaching the ability to communicate and mediate with friends and strangers alike. Tim Knue will be an effective leader, and he will have old fashioned common sense solutions, and the convictions of a qualified leader.

In our current economy and environment, healthy functioning farms are even more important to our rural community. One of the things that can have tremendous impact on the future of our local farms is our political leadership. Do you know which of the candidates is an active member of “Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland?” And, which is an award winning agricultural education teacher of 32 years?

Which candidate has actual technical knowledge of farming? Who is the only candidate who knows in his or her bones the issues faced by the farmers in our 10th Legislative District? All those questions and yet only one answer: Tim Knue.

While there are many reasons to make Tim your choice in this election, I just wanted to point out that for those of us who care about our farms – Tim is the answer!

South Whidbey Record: Knue represents real change for us

Norma Smith lost two runs for public office. She ran for U.S. House of Representatives against Rick Larsen and for state Senate against Mary Margaret Haugen.

When Chris Strow stepped down from his position in the state Legislature, Norma was hand-picked by the Republican Party elite so she could finally get the office she “deserved.” In 2002, her demeanor would lead someone to believe that she was an incumbent. She probably got that feeling from working for her mentor Jack Metcalf for so long. We have to take this opportunity — this election — to vote for Tim Knue. We do not need the person the Republican Party leaders installed in Olympia.

How can we judge these two candidates?

As a freshman legislator, she was the only one that did not pass any legislation. Another idea that needs to be addressed is Norma’s judgment. In 2002, she stated, “Certainly, I think that Rick’s decision to oppose the resolution illustrates the fundamental difference between how he and I see the world. I would have voted to stand with the president.” This refers to Rick Larsen’s vote against giving President Bush the power to attack Iraq unilaterally. Norma was not and is not an independent thinker. She will continue to toe the party line.

Tim will be a change for us. We can get a representative in Olympia who has worked hard to earn your respect. His lifelong and continuing efforts to make a difference through Future Farmer’s of America, Kiwanis and his church will continue for us at the state level. He has been rewarded at the state and national levels for his efforts to create opportunities for our youth to enter the workforce with the “real world” skills they need.

Now, there was a call for change in a recent letter to the editor, and we are all for that.

What change do we want? Do we want more of the same from Norma? No! We want an acknowledged community leader like Tim Knue. Someone who will listen, learn and act on the issues important to our way of life.

Everett Herald: Knue needed to get things accomplished

Elections are about judging the qualifications of the candidates. On the one hand, we have Tim Knue. Tim is active in his community with his church, the Future Farmers of America and Kiwanis has had a lifelong and deep commitment to helping others. Tim's hard work as a teacher has earned him state and national accolades. During Tim's 32 years as an educator in our district, he has worked with elected officials to solve the failings of our educational system as they have arisen. He has lobbied to pass crucial state legislation (SSB 5940) concerning our state's lack of career and technical training. The result of the passage of this bill ensures students have the opportunity and resources to pursue "real world" skills to enter the workforce confidently.

Norma Smith, on the other hand, is the only freshman legislator who did not pass any type of legislation into law. If you judge her by her voting record, she more often than not followed the Republican Party line. Politics as usual is not what we want from our leaders. Her immediate neighbors recognize Norma's lack of involvement in Olympia. The overwhelming majority of precincts on South Whidbey voted for Tim Knue. Even Norma's neighbors in the Deer Lake precinct decided that Tim was their choice. If we are to have a leader in Olympia who will listen to us, learn what is important to us and act on legislation that will make our district great, we need to listen, learn and act on the decision of Norma's neighbors and vote for Tim Knue.

Now that summer is fading and the school year is beginning, it is necessary to examine the state our education. I was born and raised in the educational system in Stanwood, and I now work and have family&#160;in that same school system. Education is a major priority for me in this election year, and no candidate is better qualified to fix our educational system than Tim Knue.

Tim Knue is running for the state House of Representatives, and he recently retired from a teaching career of 32 years. I have had the privilege to hear him speak about the subject, and his main message for all issues is to find the common sense-solutions. And the WASL test, he states, is hardly common sense. It is a federal mandate upon our schools, and Tim Knue believes it does not go nearly far enough to prepare our children.

The WASL fails to fully prepare our students to either go onto college or to enter the job market.&#160;He would propose an education plan that would focus more on the skills that students who go to college need the most. This includes more writing, civic understanding and a greater focus on math. He said that it is always important to show students that what they are studying and doing has a benefit that can be easily recognized. This helps with motivation.

Tim Knue is the only candidate that can even come close to providing a fully comprehensive education plan that benefits all students. He has the background, the understanding, and the vision to fix our school systems. We need him in Olympia to ensure that there is at least one state representative who truly understands the improvements our educational system needs.

I am a supporter of Tim Knue. I have had the privilege of meeting him several times. I cannot think of a person with the desire to be more honest and forthright.

He is someone who was a national finalist for Teacher of the Year in 2001. He is someone who attends church every Sunday and serves as president of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in La Conner. He has been active in Kiwanis, and has been called upon several times to help pass legislation concerning education reform.

He was a major part of helping pass legislation that made career and technical education in our grade schools part of education reform in this state. With a shortage of carpenters, craftsman, and welders, it is vital that we have a voice in Olympia that actually understands this issue.

Let's elect Tim Knue to the Washington House of Representatives for the 10th Legislative District, Position 2 this coming Nov. 4.

We have an opportunity to elect a homegrown success story to represent us in the Legislature. Tim Knue grew up here in Oak Harbor. Many know his mom who was a teacher here. True blue for Tim Knue

Tim Knue is running for the State House of Representatives, Position 1. He is a Democrat that currently lives in Conway, and he retired from teaching from Mount Vernon High School this summer. Knue is honest, a solid leader

Now more than ever, our country needs stable, accountable leadership in Olympia. Local elections are important because they dictate not only how much in taxes we predominantly pay, but how those taxes are best spent. We need leadership that has experience with tough financial situations and discouraging projections. A career in education would provide experience with both of these leadership challenges.

With increased class sizes, lowered budgets and a high turnover rate, teachers have been trained to not only lead our youth toward a successful life, but also to manage a program full of changing requirements, costs and difficulties. In a society where the health of our government depends upon the knowledge of our citizens, those who teach well, lead well. There is no more qualified leader for the 10th District than Tim Knue for state Legislature.

Having led a successful agricultural program at Mount Vernon High School, Tim was honored with the Teacher of the Year award due to his exemplary dedication and leadership. He has led students toward successful paths in life, from local farmwork all the way to cutting-edge biomedical work. One student, graduating at the top of her class at an Ivy League university, named Tim her most influential teacher of primary education.

This leadership translates directly to political work, and this is exactly what Washington needs to sustain our way of life for everyone. Tim seeks to have an open discussion on all issues and decisions. He understands that in a democracy, candidates’ records and beliefs are open to the public. This blend of leadership and dedication to honesty shows Tim’s commitment to transparency. I’m voting for Tim Knue, and I hope you will be able to as well.
